Betty Crumrine Scholarship
Deadline (received by): May 1, 2009
The 2009 Antioch Writers’ Workshop will award the Betty Crumrine Scholarship to a single parent who is committed to writing and who could not otherwise attend the workshop. The Crumrine Scholarship was created by friends of Betty Crumrine, who lived and wrote in Yellow Springs and participated in the Antioch Writers’ Workshop from 1986 until 1990. She worked full time at the Miami Valley Arts Council and later at the Miami Literacy Council, raising three children and taking care of her own mother while writing true confession stories and young adult novels. She died of cancer in March 1991. In honor of her encouragement of new writers, the Antioch Writers’ Workshop welcomes applications from beginning writers as well as those in mid-career.

This scholarship is for a week-long conference of intensive study and an honorary seat at the banquet opening night. Room, board, and transportation are not provided. The workshop, however will help the scholarship recipient to find a village host for minimal cost ($150/week). This contest is a national one; anyone from anywhere may apply.

To apply for the Betty Crumrine Scholarship to the Antioch Writers’ Workshop, please send  your submission (poetry, nonfiction, fiction, or drama), conforming to the requirements detailed above, and a one-page letter explaining your writing experience and plans and need for financial aid to:

The Goddess Award
Thanks to an anonymous (goddess-like) donor, the Goddess Award of $500 will be given to the first Antioch Writers’ Workshop participant from a summer session, male or female, who earns publication for a piece that was begun, revised, or critiqued during the week of the workshop. The work must be:

  • fiction or nonfiction written for an adult audience (poetry, plays, scripts and children’s literature does not qualify.)

  • published or accepted for publication and payment in a reputable/recognized market. Self-published and e-published pieces do not qualify.

  • submitted by June 1 of the year following the previous summer's weeklong workshop; e.g., by June 1, 2010 for submissions workshopped during the 2009 summer workshop. (Pieces from workshops prior to the previous summer do not qualify.)

No award will be made in any year in which these standards are not met. Additionally, please note that while AWW processes the submissions, awards are given strictly at the Goddess Award donor's discretion.

To apply for the Goddess Award of the Antioch Writers’ Workshop, please submit—via registered mail—a copy of the publisher’s acceptance letter; a copy of the work accepted for publication; a brief essay describing how the workshop aided in the publication of this piece, including mention of the key people or circumstances involved; and a self-addressed stamped envelope to:
